Prior to delve into ovulation induction and intrauterine insemination, it is quite important to understand natural fertilization cycle.
Every month, ovary releases an egg which enters fallopian tube in the direction to uterus. In the meanwhile, sperm is released into the vagina by the way of copulation that approaches the egg and get mixed with it in fallopian tube in order to result into embryo. The embryo after 5-6 days, get implanted in the thick lining of the uterus. From there the journey to parenthood begins. This whole process is known as Natural Fertilization.
In some cases, owing to the plethora of factors, natural conception is not that easy and creates trouble in getting pregnant. Factors can be anything like blockage of tubes, endometriosis, male factor infertility, failure of formation of egg or ovulation. These all creates natural fertilization complicated. So, couples need to undergo certain treatments for conceiving such as IVF- In-vitro fertilization, IUI- Intrauterine insemination, ICSI -Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, OI- Ovulation Induction and many more. These are all artificial reproductive techniques to get pregnant.
Ovulation Induction:
Ovulation Induction is a process whereby fertility medications such as Clomiphene citrate (Clomid) and Letrozole are used to stimulate the ovaries for boosting the egg production and ovulation trigger is used to release egg.
Step by Step process of Conceiving via Ovulation Induction:
Consultation:
The very first step of this process is to have consultation with the fertility specialist. You need to put heads together with doctor to discuss whether this treatment is feasible for you in your current position or should you go for it or not?
Discuss each and everything with the doctor about your medical history, lifestyle, sex life etc. He will guide you the best for treatment as per your requirement. After undergoing certain tests like physical and medical test, certain fertility tests, recommended by doctor, you will be given appointment for your treatment.
Stimulation:
As per the scheduled appointment, you will visit the clinic whereby you will be given certain fertility medications to stimulate your follicles to elevate the egg production.
Monitor:
The response of the ovaries will be monitored under ultrasound. The size, quantity, quality and growth will be even controlled by blood tests and ultrasound to avoid risk of multiple and ectopic pregnancies.
Trigger shot:
Once it is confirmed that egg has been matured then, a trigger shot will be given by the way of injection of Human chorionic Gonadotropins to loosen the egg from the follicle wall.
Either sexual intercourse or IUI:
For the confirmation, pelvic ultrasound will be performed to assess the growth of follicle and to determine the perfect time to have intercourse so to increase the chance of pregnancy. Later, doctor will guide you about the days for intercourse. In some cases, copulation even don’t work then fertility specialist will recommend you to undergo IUI- Intrauterine insemination.
IUI Intrauterine Insemination:
Intrauterine insemination is a process involves directly injecting specially concentrated and washed sperm into the uterus of the women through the cervix when she is ovulating.
IUI process:
Consultation & Scan:
We will have you to undergo 2 or 3 monitoring scans to monitor the growth of your follicle and track ovulation.
Semen/ Sperm preparation:
On this day, male partner has to provide a sample of semen at the laboratory. Once the time is right to perform the IUI, the semen sample will be washed and prepared before the procedure.
Insemination/ Fertilization:
When she is ovulating, the specially washed semen is to be introduced in the uterus through catheter. Moreover, some medications will be prescribed to accomplish better results.
Pregnancy Test:
After 20 days of this procedure, you will have to visit the clinic for pregnancy test and confirmation via blood or urine test.
Ovulation Induction is a process to stimulate ovaries to produce egg. Whereas IUI is an Artificial Insemination to mingle sperm with the egg. IUI is used when sperm quality of male isn’t good enough to get in the egg. Both this can be done in continuation, after ovulation induction, Intrauterine insemination can be done to conceive.
